Rear Axle Shaft Seal and Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Flange Replacement

* J 24420-C Harmonic Balancer Puller
* J 21426 Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the rear wheel drive shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LP1/LY7) (Service and Repair)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LSA) (Service and Repair).




3. Using the J 24420-C and the J 2619-01 , remove the rear drive axle flange.




4. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, remove the drive axle flange axle seal (1) from the differential side cover (2).

Installation Procedure

1. Apply a small amount of clean 75W-90 synthetic gear lube, GM P/N 12378261 (Canadian P/N 10953455) to the sealing lips of the seal.




2. Using the J 21426 (1) and a hammer, install the drive axle flange seal (2) in the differential side cover (3).




3. Using the appropriate tool, install the wheel drive flange in the rear differential.
4. Install the rear wheel drive shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LP1/LY7) (Service and Repair)Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (RPO LSA) (Service and Repair).
5. Inspect the fluid level of the rear drive axle. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Level Inspection ().
6. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
