Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair



Steering Wheel Theft Deterrent Lock Replacement

^ Tools Required
- J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

Removal Procedure





1. Caution: Refer to Restraint System Caution in Service Precautions.

Disable the SIR coil.

2. Notice: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.

Lock the steering column through the access hole in the lower trim cover using J 42640
3. Remove the steering wheel from the column.
4. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
5. Inspect the steering column for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection.





6. Remove the necessary wire straps from the wire harness assembly.
7. Disconnect the connector for the power tilt and telescope toggle switch assembly from the telescope module at the base of the column.





8. Gently pry the steering column closeout trim cover (1) from the lower trim cover (2).
9. Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws (4) from the lower trim cover (2).
10. Remove the lower trim cover (2) with the power tilt and telescope toggle switch assembly (3) still attached to the trim cover.
11. If necessary, remove the power tilt and telescope toggle switch assembly (3) out from the lower trim cover (2).
12. Push up on the manual override of the steering wheel theft deterrent lock.
13. Turn the key to the lock position. Remove the key.
14. Remove the ignition lock cylinder.





15. Remove the pan head tapping screw (2) from the upper trim cover (1).
16. Remove the upper trim cover (1) with the closeout trim cover (3) still attached.





17. Remove the black connector (2) from the steering wheel theft deterrent lock (1).
18. Remove the tapping screw (3) from the theft deterrent lock (1) mounting hole and the ignition key alarm switch assembly.
19. Pry the theft deterrent lock (1) off of the ignition lock cylinder case assembly.

Installation Procedure





1. Snap the steering wheel theft deterrent lock (1) onto the ignition lock cylinder case assembly.
2. Install the tapping screw (3) into the mounting hole of the theft deterrent lock (1) and the ignition and key alarm switch assembly.
3. Install the ignition lock cylinder.
4. Install the black connector into the theft deterrent lock (2).





5. Install the upper trim cover (1).

6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Install the pan head tapping screw (2) to the upper trim cover (1).
Tighten the screw to 1.5 Nm (13 inch lbs.).





7. If necessary install the power tilt and telescope toggle switch assembly (3) into the lower trim cover (2).
8. Install the lower trim cover (2) onto the steering column.
9. Attach the closeout trim cover (1) to the lower trim cover (2).
10. Install the 2 pan head tapping screws (4) to the lower trim cover (2).
Tighten the screws to 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.).





11. Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Coil Caution in Service Precautions.

Connect the connector of the power tilt and telescope toggle switch assembly into the telescope module at the base of the column.
12. Install the necessary wire harness straps.
13. Install the steering column into the vehicle.
14. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column.
15. Enable the SIR system.
