Oil Change Reminder Lamp: Service and Repair
DESCRIPTION:The "Change Oil" indicator on the instrument panel will illuminate when the oil needs to be changed, usually between 5,000 km (3,000 miles) and 12,500 km (7,500 miles) after the last reset. Under severe conditions, the indicator may illuminate before 5,000 km (3,000 miles). The vehicle should not be driven more than 12,500 km (7,500 miles) or twelve months without an oil change.
The system won't detect dust in the oil. So, if the vehicle is driven in a dusty area, be sure to change the oil every 3,000 miles (5,000 km) or sooner if the "Change Oil" indicator lamp illuminates. It is also recommended that the engine oil filter be changed and the chassis be lubricated at EVERY oil change.
RESET PROCEDURE:
After changing engine oil, reset the engine oil life monitor whether the "CHANGE OIL" warning/indicator lamp came on or not. Reset the engine oil life monitor as follows:
1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position, but don't start engine.
2. Depress the accelerator pedal to "Wide Open Throttle" (WOT) position and release it three times within five seconds.
^ The light is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM is monitoring the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) signal for three consecutive signals above 96%. The PCM will acknowledge, if the reset has been successful by flashing the "Change Oil" light twice, then turning off the light.
3. If "CHANGE OIL" warning/indicator lamp goes out, the system has been reset.
4. If "CHANGE OIL" warning/indicator lamp does not reset, turn ignition switch "OFF" and repeat procedure.
^ If the engine oil life monitor operates improperly, refer to Powertrain Management / Computers and Control System / Diagnosis and Testing.
