Rack and Pinion Assembly

STEERING GEAR

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Hoist car with suspension contact hoist and suitably support.

CAUTION: To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the end opposite from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off the hoist.

2. Both front tire and wheel assemblies.

CAUTION: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

3. Intermediate shaft lower connection.
4. Both tie rod ends from steering knuckles.
5. Line retainer.
6. Outlet and pressure hose.
7. Five rack and pinion attaching bolts.
8. Rack and pinion assembly by sliding out to side.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Rack and pinion assembly.
2. Five rack and pinion attaching bolts.

TIGHTEN
^ Bolts to 68 Nm (50 lb. ft.).

3. Outlet and pressure hose.

TIGHTEN
^ Connections to 27 Nm (20 lb. ft.).

4. Line retainer.
5. Both tie rod ends.

TIGHTEN
^ Nuts to 50 Nm (35 lb. ft.). The maximum permissible torque to align cotter pin slot is 70 Nm (52 lb. ft.) max or up to 1/6 additional turn. Do not back off nut for cotter pin insertion.

6. Intermediate shaft coupling.

TIGHTEN
^ Intermediate shaft coupling bolt to 50 Nm (30 lb. ft.).

7. Tire and wheel assemblies.
8. Lower car.
9. Bleed power steering system.

INSPECT
^ For leaks.
