A revised shoe and lining assembly is used on late production 1987 Cadillacs. The revised assembly includes a new lining material and extended shoes, eliminating the need for the stainless steel shoe abutment insulators (13), Fig. 2. This shoe and lining assembly can also be identified by the lining edge code: The original lining code is DM 121 FE, while the revised lining code is DM 128 FE. The revised shoe and lining assembly can be used on earlier models, however, the insulators must be removed and discarded.
1. Install lubricated bushings into bolt holes in caliper bracket.
2. Bottom piston in caliper bore using suitable pliers, protecting piston to prevent damage. Do not allow pliers to contact actuator screw.
3. Lubricate new two-way check valve, then insert valve into piston.
4. Install inboard shoe assembly as follows:
a. Engage inboard shoe edge in straight tabs of retainer, then press down and snap shoe under S-shaped tabs, Fig. 4.
b. Ensure shoe lays flat against piston and that retainer and piston are properly aligned. Note that tab on retainer are different, Fig. 3, and rotate retainer as needed.
c. Ensure buttons on back of shoe engage D-shaped notches in piston. Rotate piston as needed with spanner J-7624 or equivalent. Piston is properly aligned when D-shaped notches are aligned with caliper mounting bolt holes, Fig. 3.
5. Install outboard shoe assembly, snap shoe springs into holes in caliper and ensure pad lays flat against caliper.
