SUBJECT: LOW COOLANT LEVEL
MODELS AFFECTED: 1987-1988 CIMARRONS
Some 1987-1988 Cimarrons may experience a condition of low coolant level which could result in some or all of the following conditions:
1. Low coolant light flashes during acceleration.
2. Temperature gauge needle indicates high engine temperature.
3. No coolant flow from the reservoir bottle to the radiator.
This condition may be caused by air trapped in the coolant system, preventing proper system fill, and/or a damaged seal surface of the coolant filler cap assembly.
To repair this condition perform the following:
1. Review engine cooling and radiator service procedure as detailed in Section 6B of the Service Information Manual.
2. Perform burp procedure as outlined in Section 6B of the Service Information Manual.
FIGURE 1 - COOLANT FILLER CAP:
3. Inspect the filler cap sealing surface on the coolant filler neck assembly for damage or distortion, refer to Figure 1. If damaged or distorted, replace the coolant filler neck assembly.
4. Verify filler cap function by removing the coolant recovery hose at the filler assembly and applying a vacuum to the recovery hose fitting. A functioning cap will hold a vacuum of 15 to 25 inches-mercury for several minutes. If necessary, replace filler cap.
5. Fill and pressure check the coolant system. Check the coolant recovery hose and connections for coolant leaks or restrictions. Repair as required.
6. Test drive or let the engine run until the engine has reached normal operating temperatures to verify the cooling system is full. Add coolant as required.
