SUBJECT: DELAYED AND/OR HARSH UPSHIFTS - THM 125C

MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 CIMARRON

Some 1987 Cimarrons equipped with an automatic transaxles may exhibit delayed and/or harsh upshifts.

This condition may be caused by insufficient travel of the throttle lever on the engine throttle body assembly.

FIGURE 1 - CHECKING THROTTLE BODY FOR IDENTIFICATION HOLE:

To repair this condition, use the following procedure. Inspect the throttle valve (T.V.) cable for proper operation and adjustment (refer to Section 7A1 of the Service Information Manual). If the T.V. system is operating properly, inspect the throttle lever for presence of an identification hole, refer to Figure 1. The identification hole verifies a lever with CORRECT travel. If the lever is correct, follow the diagnostic procedure in the Service Information Manual for harsh shift conditions.
If the lever does not have the identification hole, install a new throttle body Service Kit, P/N 17111882, which includes the revised throttle lever. Use the removal and installation procedure in Section 6E3 of the Service Information Manual.

NOTE: The throttle body service kit includes only the core throttle body. It does not include the following parts, which should be transferred from the original assembly.

-- Coolant cover and attaching screws
-- Idle air control valve, housing and screws
-- Throttle position sensor and screws

After replacing the throttle body, preset the throttle stop screw as follows:

-- Back the throttle stop screw out until it breaks contact with the throttle lever. Turn the screw in to lightly contact the lever, then an additional 1-3/4 turns. Minimum idle speed adjustment must be performed following the procedure in Section 6E3 of the Service Information Manual.
