Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair

NOTE: Use of shop air pressure may be used to hold one piston within its compression stroke without turning the crankshaft. Remove a spark plug and install adapter J-22794, or equivalent, finger tight in spark plug port. Apply air pressure to hold piston within its compression stroke. Adapter should not be wrench tightened.


REMOVAL
1. Remove negative battery cable.
2. Remove serpentine belt.
3. Raise car on hoist.
4. Remove right front tire.
5. Remove right front air deflector.
6. Loosen and reposition heater by-pass line.

Crankshaft Pulley And Damper:





7. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts (4). Remove crankshaft pulley from damper.
8. Remove plug from end of crankshaft.

Installing Damper Pilot:





9. Install puller pilot, J-21052-4, in crankshaft bore.

Removing Damper:





10. Install holding base, J-21052-02, on front hub.
11. Tighten puller screw with a wrench until damper/hub is free.

INSTALLATION
1. Lubricate hub bore with EP (extreme pressure) lubricant.
2. Position damper on crankshaft. Make sure that the hub key slot lines up with the crankshaft key.

Installing Damper Assembly:





3. Install hub with tool J-29774 until tool bottoms out.
4. Install crankshaft pulley. Apply Loctite to pulley bolts and tighten to:

20 Ft. Lbs. (27 Nm)

5. Secure heater bypass line.
6. Install front air deflector.
7. Install right front tire.
8. Lower car.
9. Install serpentine belt.
10. Reconnect negative battery cable.
11. Recheck work for leaks and completeness.
