Radio - Noise on AM Band

Bulletin No. T 84-22
File In Group 9
Number 14
Date Nov. '83
SUBJECT: AM RADIO NOISE ON VEHICLES WITH DIGITAL CLUSTERS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1983 ELDORADO AND SEVILLE

Some 1981-1983 Eldorados and Sevilles vehicles may experience AM Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) that could possibly be caused by the digital cluster power supply. If the digital cluster is diagnosed to be the cause of AM RFI, a new tube and circuit board assembly can be obtained from one of the three AC-Delco Repair Centers (listed below) that have exchange units. When ordering the exchange unit, describe the condition and reference ACSpark Plug memo "Cadillac RFI Modification" to assure delivery of the correct assembly.

To diagnose the condition to the digital cluster, isolate a station having the RFI condition; the RFI from the digital cluster may tend to fade in and out. With the ignition in the "RUN" position, eliminate all other possible conditions of AM reception interference, such as bad connections or poor grounds. If the RFI persists, quickly switch the ignition from "RUN" to "ACCESSORY" position to eliminate power to the digital cluster. If RFI goes away, replace tube and circuit board assembly (after removal, recheck same station with ignitition in "RUN" position).
