Flex Plate: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle.
2. Remove the transmission.
3. Remove the eight bolts attaching the flywheel to the crankshaft flange. Discard the bolts.
4. Remove the flywheel.
5. Inspect the flywheel for worn or broken teeth, and cracks. Replace if necessary.
6. Inspect the crankshaft and flywheel mating surfaces for burrs.
TOOLS REQUIRED
^ J 36660 Torque Angle Meter
^ J 8001 Dial Indicator Set
^ Or equivalent
INSTALLATION
1. Install the flywheel.
2. Install the flywheel bolts.
^ Tighten the new bolts to 15 Nm (11 lb ft). Use the J36660 in order to tighten the bolts an additional 50°.
3. Install the J 8001 to the engine block.
4. Check the flywheel runout at the three attaching bosses. Ensure that the crankshaft end-play is held in one direction when checking flywheel runout. Flywheel runout should not exceed 0.381 mm (0.015 inch).
5. If flywheel runout is out of specification, tap on the high side with a mallet in order to correct runout.
6. Replace the flywheel if runout cannot be corrected.
7. Install the transmission.
8. Lower the vehicle.
