Unit Repair
CAUTION: Keep fingers away from rear brake shoe springs to prevent fingers from being pinched between spring and shoe web or spring and backing plate.
NOTICE: Do not pry against the splash shield or backing plate in attempt to free the drum. This will bend the splash shield or backing plate. A bent backing plate may cause brake chatter and/or pulsation.
NOTICE: Do not over stretch the Adjuster spring. Damage can occur if the spring is over stretched.
DISASSEMBLE
1. Wheel cylinder.
2. Boots.
3. Pistons and seals.
4. Spring.
5. Bleeder valve.
Inspect
- Cylinder bore and pistons for:
^ Scoring
^ Nicks
^ Corrosion
^ Wear
- Use crocus cloth to polish out light corrosion.
- Replace wheel cylinder if bore will not clean up with crocus cloth.
Clean
1. All parts in clean denatured alcohol.
2. Dry with nonlubricated compressed air.
3. Lubricate new seals with clean brake fluid.
ASSEMBLE
NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. the manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and the joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.
1. Bleeder valve.
- Tighten bleeder valve to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.).
2. Spring.
3. Seal, pistons and boots.
4. Wheel cylinder.
