Shoes and Linings






^ Tool Required:
- J 38400 Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover


CAUTION: Keep fingers away from rear brake shoe springs to prevent fingers from being pinched between spring and shoe web or spring and backing plate.

NOTICE: Do not pry against the splash shield or backing plate in attempt to free the drum. This will bend the splash shield or backing plate. A bent backing plate may cause brake chatter and/or pulsation.

NOTICE: Do not over stretch the Adjuster spring. Damage can occur if the spring is over stretched.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
2. Mark relationship of wheel to axle flange.
3. Tire and wheel.
4. Mark relationship of drum to axle flange.
5. Brake drum.
- If difficulty is encountered in removing drum the following steps may be of assistance:
A. Remove retainer clip.
B. Make sure parking brake is released.
C. Back off parking brake cable adjustment.
D. Remove the access hole plug from the backing plate.





E. Using a flat bladed tool, back off adjusting screw.
F. Reinstall access hole plug to prevent dirt or contamination from entering the drum brake.
G. Use a small amount of penetrating oil applied around the drum pilot hole.





6. Adjuster spring.
- Use J 38400 to pry loop end of adjuster spring from adjuster actuator then disengage from web of parking brake shoe.
7. Lift end of return spring from adjuster shoe and lining.
A. Insert hook end of J 38400 between return spring and adjuster shoe web.
B. Pry or twist J 38400 to lift end of spring out of shoe web hole.
8. Pry end of return spring toward axle with flat edge of J 38400 until it snaps down off shoe web onto backing plate.
9. Adjuster actuator from shoe and lining, and adjusting screw.
10. Parking brake lever from parking brake shoe and lining.
- Do not remove parking brake cable from parking brake lever unless parking brake lever is to be replaced.
11. Lift end of return spring from parking brake shoe and lining.
A. Insert hook end of J 38400 between return spring and parking brake shoe web.
B. Pry or twist J 38400 to lift end of spring out of shoe web hole.








12. Pry end of return spring toward axle with flat edge of J 38400 until it snaps down off shoe web onto backing plate.
13. Parking brake shoe and lining.
14. Return spring from backing plate.
- If only shoes and linings are being replaced it is not necessary to remove return spring.

Clean
- All parts in clean denatured alcohol.

Inspect
If any component parts are of doubtful strength or quality due to discoloration from heat, over stress, or are worn, the parts should be replaced.
- Wheel cylinder for leakage and cut or damaged boots. To remove and replace, refer to WHEEL CYLINDER. Do not attempt to repair wheel cylinder.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

Important:
- Lubricate the following with or equivalent brake lubricant.
^ Six raised shoe pads on backing plate.
^ Anchor surfaces on backing plate that contact lower ends of brake shoes.

1. If return spring was removed, reinstall hooking center spring section under tab on anchor.
2. Parking brake shoe and lining.
A. Position shoe and lining on backing plate.





B. Using J 38400, pull end of return spring up and rest on web of brake shoe.
C. Using J 38400, pull end of return spring over until it snaps in slot in brake shoe.
3. Parking brake lever to parking brake shoe and lining.
4. Parking brake cable to parking brake lever, if disconnected.

Clean





- Before reinstalling, adjusting screw must be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned and lubricated.
A. Clean adjuster screw threads with a wire brush.
B. Wash all components in clean denatured alcohol.
C. Apply GM P/N 1052196 or equivalent brake lubricant to the adjuster screw threads, inside diameter of adjuster socket and socket face.
D. Adequate lubrication is achieved when a continuous bead of lubricant is on end of adjuster nut and socket when threads are fully engaged.

Inspect
- Threads of adjuster screw for smooth rotation over full length.

5. Adjusting screw and adjuster shoe and lining.





A. Engage adjuster nut end of adjusting screw with web of parking brake shoe and lining and parking brake lever.
B. Position adjuster shoe and lining so that shoe web engages the deep slot in socket end of adjusting screw.
6. Return spring into adjuster shoe and lining.
A. Using J 38400, pull end of return spring up and rest on web of brake shoe.
B. Using J 38400, pull end of return spring over until it snaps in slot in brake shoe.





7. Adjuster actuator.
A. Lubricate tab and pivot point on adjuster lever with GM P/N 1052196 or equivalent brake lubricant.
B. Using J 38400, spread brake shoes while working adjuster actuator into position.
8. Adjuster spring.
A. Engage U-shaped end of spring in hole in web of parking brake shoe.
B. Using J 38400, stretch spring and engage loop end over tab on adjuster actuator.

Inspect
- Note the following to insure proper positioning and function of the adjuster actuator.
A. Adjuster actuator pivot in shoe web slot.
B. Notch in adjuster actuator on step in adjusting screw notch.
C. Arm of adjuster actuator resting freely on star wheel teeth of adjuster screw, not trapped under teeth in a downward angle.
D. Install J 38400 between upper ends of shoe and lining assemblies. Spread shoes apart and watch for proper rotation of star wheel.

Adjust
- Brakes. Refer to BRAKE ADJUSTMENT. Adjustments
- Parking brake.

9. Brakes drums, aligning marks made at removal.





10. Tires and wheels, aligning marks made at removal.
11. Lower vehicle.
