Extension Housing: Service and Repair









^ Tool Required:
- J 34757 Output Shaft C-Ring Remover and Installer
- J 36850 TRANSJEL(R)
- J 37292-A Axle Seal Protector

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Vehicle speech sensor.
3. Raise vehicle and suitable support.
4. Light front tire and wheel assembly.
5. Right drive axle.

Important: Carefully Guide right drive axle output shaft past the lip seal. Do not allow shaft splices to contact any portion of lip seal surface; otherwise damaged: to the seal will occur.

6. Torque strut bracket from transaxle. Loosen torque strut to bracket bolt as needed, and swing bracket out of way.
7. Brace from en dine bracket.
8. Case extension bolts.
9. Case extension assembly and seal
10. Thrust bearing and flasher.
11. Rotate final Rive assembly until opening in snap ring is visible.
12. Using tool J 34757, push snap ring partially off output shaft.
13. Final drive sun gear.
14. Parking gear.
15. Thrust bearing.
16. Final drive sun gear shaft.

Important: If further service is needed on the final drive assembly, refer to TRANSAXLE UNIT REPAIR.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Final drive sun gear shaft.
2. Thrust bearing.
3. Parking gear.
4. Final drive sun gear.
5. Final drive assembly onto output shaft.
6. Snap ring onto output shaft, using J 34757.
7. Washer and thrust bearing onto final drive assembly. Use assembly lube TRANSJEL( J 36850, or equivalent (petroleum jelly), to retain washer and bearing.
8. Seal and case extension.
9. Case extension bolts.
- Tighten bolts to 36 Nm (27 ft. lbs.).
10. Brace to engine bracket.
11. Torque strut bracket to transaxle.
12. Right drive axle.

Important: Before instating right side drive axle, be sure to install tool J 37292-A axle seal protector. Install in a position so it can be pulled or after drive axle is installed (T-handle between 5 and 7 o'clock).

13. Front tire and wheel assembly. Tighten wheel nut to specifications; refer to STEERING AND SUSPENSION.
14. Remove J 37292-A by pulling in line with handle. Be sure it is completely removed, and no piece remain inside transaxle.
15. Lower vehicle.
16. Speed sensor with O-ring onto case extension.
- Tighten vehicle speed sensor bolt to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
17. Negative battery cable.
