Case: Service and Repair
CASE SIDE COVER AND GASKETS 4T60-EREMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Cruise control vacuum hoses at servo.
3. Transaxle neutral start switch connector.
4. Install J 28467-A.
5. Bolts at top of transaxle mount bracket.
6. Torque struts at engine mounts.
7. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
8. Left front wheel and tire assembly.
9. Inner splash shield.
10. Tie rod end from knuckle assembly.
11. Stabilizer shaft link from lower control arm.
12. Ball joint from steering knuckle.
NOTICE: Drive axle seal protector J 34754 should be modified and installed on any drive axle prior to service procedures on or near the drive axle. Failure to observe this can result in seal damage and possible joint failure.
13. Drive axle from transaxle.
14. Pinch bolt from steering gear intermediate shaft.
CAUTION: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.
15. Intermediate shaft from steering gear.
16. Position a transmission jack under transaxle oil pan. Raise jack until it supports transaxle.
17. Three frame-to-body bolts on left side.
18. Lower left side of engine transaxle, as needed using J 28467-A.
19. Transaxle mount bracket and mount.
20. Lower the transmission jack and transaxle to gain access to the case side cover.
21. Oil cooler pipes at case.
22. Side cover bolts.
23. Case side cover.
CLEAN
^ Case and side cover gasket surfaces.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gaskets on case.
2. Side cover and new bolts.
TIGHTEN
^ Side cover bolts to 9 to 13 Nm (80 to 115 inch lbs.).
3. Oil cooler pipes.
TIGHTEN
^ Ball check fitting to 46 to 58 Nm (34 to 43 ft. lbs.).
^ Pipe fitting 32 to 44 Nm (24 to 33 ft. lbs.).
4. Raise left side of engine/transaxle, as needed, using J 28467-A.
5. Transaxle mount bracket and mount. Start top bolts first.
6. Three frame-to-body bolts.
TIGHTEN
^ Rear top bracket to transaxle bolt to 58 Nm (43 lb. ft.).
^ Front top bracket to transaxle/engine bolt to 75 Nm (55 lb. ft.).
^ Front side bracket to transaxle bolt and stud to 64 Nm (47 lb. ft.).
^ Bracket to mount nuts to 41 Nm (30 lb. ft.).
^ Transaxle mount to frame nuts to 41 Nm (30 lb. ft.).
^ Frame-to-body bolts to 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).
7. Remove transmission jack.
8. Intermediate shaft to steering gear.
9. Pinch bolt at intermediate shaft.
10. Drive axle.
11. Ball joint to steering knuckle.
12. Remove drive axle seal protectors.
13. Stabilizer shaft link to lower control arm.
14. Tie rod end to knuckle.
15. Inner splash shield.
16. Left front wheel and tire assembly.
17. Lower vehicle.
18. Torque struts at engine mounts.
19. Remove J 28467-A.
20. Transaxle neutral start switch connector.
21. Cruise control servo vacuum hoses.
22. Negative battery cable.
INSPECT
^ For leaks.
^ Fluid level.
