CASE SIDE COVER AND GASKETS 4T60 (440-T4)

Fig. 4, Valve body assembly:






REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Install J 28467 Support Fixture.
3. Air intake duct.
4. Torque strut.
5. Cruise control servo.
6. Shift cable bracket and cable from transaxle.
7. Park/Neutral and backup lamp switch connector.
8. Wiring harness to transaxle bolts.
9. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
10. Left front wheel and tire assembly.
11. Inner splash shield.
12. Tie rod end from knuckle assembly.
13. Stabilizer shaft from control arm.
14. Ball joint from steering knuckle.

NOTICE: Drive axle seal protector J 34754 should be modified and installed on any drive axle prior to service procedures on or near the drive axle. Failure to observe this can result in seal damage and possible joint failure.

15. Disengage drive axle from transaxle.
16. Pinch bolt from steering gear intermediate shaft.

CAUTION: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.

17. Intermediate shaft from steering gear.
18. Oil cooler pipes from transaxle.
19. Right front engine and left rear transaxle mounts from frame.
20. Three frame-to-body bolts on left side.
21. Lower the transmission jack and transaxle to gain access to the case side cover.
22. Side cover bolts.
23. Case side cover.

CLEAN
^ Case and side cover gasket surfaces.

INSPECT
^ Inspect pan bolts for reuse.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gaskets on case.
2. Side cover and bolts.

TIGHTEN
^ Side cover bolts to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).

3. Oil cooler pipes.

TIGHTEN
^ Oil cooler pipes to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.).

4. Raise transaxle so frame bolts can be installed.
5. Three frame-to-body bolts.

TIGHTEN
^ Frame-to-body bolts to 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs.).

6. Remove transmission jack.
7. Intermediate shaft to steering gear.
8. Pinch bolt.

TIGHTEN
^ Pinch bolt to 62 Nm (45 lb. ft.).

9. Drive axle.
10. Ball joint to steering knuckle.

TIGHTEN
^ Bolt to 65 Nm (48 lb. ft.).

11. Remove drive axle seal protectors.
12. Stabilizer shaft to control arm.
13. Inner splash shield.
14. Left front wheel and tire assembly.
15. Lower vehicle.
16. Park/Neutral and backup lamp switch connector.
17. Shift cable and bracket to transaxle.
18. Wiring harness bolts.
19. Air intake duct.
20. Torque strut.
21. Cruise control servo.
22. Negative battery cable.

INSPECT
^ Fluid level.
^ Adjust the shift cable if necessary.
