Engine - Removal Procedure Revision

SUBJECT: ENGINE REMOVAL PROCEDURE REVISION (VIN CODE P)
MODELS AFFECTED: 1983-1984 SKYHAWKS
The following procedure should be used whenever it becomes necessary to remove an engine from the above models:
ENGINE ASSEMBLY
Remove or Disconnect
Tool Required: J-24420 Crankshaft Balancer Hub Remover
1. Battery cables.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Air cleaner assembly.
4. Accelerator and T.V. cables at the throttle body.
5. ECM harness at engine.
6. Hoses:
- Vacuum
- Upper and lower radiator at engine
- Heater hoses at engine
7. Exhaust heat shield.
8. (Air Conditioning) - adjustment bolt at motor mount.
9. Engine wiring harness at bulkhead.
10. Windshield washer bottle.
11. Drive belts:
- Alternator
- Power steering
- Air conditioning
12. Fuel hoses.
13. Raise car.
14. (Air Conditioning) - A/C brace.
15. Inner fender splash shield.
16. (Air Conditioning) - A/C compressor.
17. Flywheel splash shield.
18. Starter wires.
19. Front starter brace and starter.
20. Torque converter bolts.
21. Crankshaft pulley.
22. Crankshaft hub using Tool J-24420.
23. Oil filter.
24. Engine to transmission support bracket.
25. Right rear motor mount.
26. Exhaust pipe at manifold.
27. Exhaust pipe at center hanger and loosen muffler hanger.
28. T.V. and shift cable bracket.
29. Lower two (2) bellhousing bolts.
30. Lower car.
31. Right front motor mount nuts.
32. Alternator and adjusting brace.
33. Master cylinder from booster, set aside and suitably support
34. Install lifting device.
35. Right front motor mount bracket.
36. Remaining upper bellhousing bolts.
37. Power steering pump while lifting engine.
38. Engine assembly.
Install or Connect
1. Engine assembly
2. Power steering pump while lowering engine.
3. Upper bellhousing bolts.
4. Right front motor mount bracket.
5. Remove lifting device.
6. Master cylinder to brake booster.
7. Alternator and adjusting brace.
8. Right front motor mount nuts and torque to specification.
9. Raise car.
10. Remaining lower bellhousing bolts.
11. T.V. and shift cable bracket.
12. Exhaust pipe at center hanger and tighten muffler hanger.
13. Exhaust pipe at manifold.
14. Right rear motor mount.
15. Engine to transmission support bracket.
16. Oil filter.
17. Crankshaft hub and pulley.
18. Torque converter bolts.
19. Front starter brace and starter.
20. Starter wires.
21. Flywheel splash shield.
22. (Air Conditioning) - A/C compressor.
23. Inner fender splash shield.
24. (Air Conditioning) - A/C brace.
25. Lower car.
26. Fuel hoses.
27. Drive belts:
- Alternator
- Power steering
- Air conditioning
28. Windshield washer bottle.
29. Engine wiring harness at bulkhead.
30. (Air Conditioning) - Adjustment bolt at motor mount.
31. Exhaust heat shield.
32. Hoses:
- Vacuum
- Upper and lower radiator at engine
- Heater hoses at engine
33. ECM harness at engine.
34. Accelerator and T.V. cables at throttle body.
35. Air cleaner assembly.
36. Refill cooling system.
37. Battery cables.
Inspect
- For proper brake system operation.
- For proper fluid levels.
- For fluid leaks.
