Engine - Elimination of Rear Main Bearing Cap Groove

Bulletin 84-6-31

Date May '84

Ref. No. 84-217-6
SUBJECT: ELIMINATION OF REAR MAIN BEARING CAP GROOVE

MODELS AFFECTED: 1984 SKYLARKS AND CENTURYS EQUIPPED WITH 2.5L ENGINES (VIN CODE R)

The groove in the rear main bearing cap, which was used to retain the oil pan gasket seal in prior years, has been eliminated.

This change should have no effect on Service procedures other than a reduction in the amount of sealant required for oil pan installation.

Past model service engine blocks, 1982 and prior years, may or may not have the groove and will have to be serviced using the appropriate procedures for the application. Gaskets can not be used on engines without the bearing cap groove.
