SUBJECT
Standard CPT 8000 Phone on MY '02 E52 (Z8) Vehicles

MODEL
E52, Z8 vehicles produced from 09/01

SITUATION

Starting with MY 2002 production, the BMW Digital CPT 8000 Phone is standard equipment on Z8 vehicles.

The following components of the CPT 8000 phone will be factory installed in these vehicles: hands-free microphone, center console located CPT 8000 specific cradle, Dual-band (800/1900 MHz) antenna, TCU Module (Telematics Control Unit), and Dual-band Compensator.

BMW CPT 8000 Digital TIMEPORT Phone features an easily recognized (silver) handset.

E52 (Z8) vehicles equipped with BMW CPT 8000 Phone components can be identified by thinner flange material located at the base of the phone cradle (1).

NOTE:
The CPT 7000 cradle (2) has a large flange at the base (as identified on the illustration by the arrows).

General information on BMW CPT 8000 Digital Phone:

1. The CPT 8000 on the E52 vehicles functions as a fully integrated Portable Digital Phone as well as a Mayday (Emergency) and Roadside Assistance "BMW ASSIST" Call System.

Additional features include automatic "Mayday" call on airbag deployment and upon activation of the vehicle's theft alarm (phone handset must be installed in the cradle in order to operate this functions).

2. The Telematics Control Unit (TCU) for the CPT 8000 Phone replaces the well-known Portable Support Electronics (PSE box) used with the CPT 7000 Digital StarTac Phone. The TCU coding for vehicle configuration and VIN data takes place automatically during the first power-up/power-down cycle after phone installation.

3. The CPT 8000 Digital TIMEPORT phone is available in both CDMA and TDMA versions. Both versions are true tri-mode, dual-band phones meaning they will operate in the following modes: 1900MHz Digital (CDMA/TDMA), 800MHz Digital (CDMA/TDMA) or 800MHz Analog (AMPS).

Due to the complexity of the cellular service network, the CPT 8000 Handsets are Network Provider specific, and as a result there are 23 separate part numbers for the "CPT 8000 Phone Body Kits" (handsets). For this reason the CPT 8000 handsets are not included in the factory installation.

During the sales process, customers must be informed about their choice of cellular providers, and according to the customer's selection, the correct part number (area specific) "CPT 8000 Phone Body Kit" must be ordered. The cost of the "CPT 8000 Phone Body Kit" ($475.00) has been added to the QC1 payment.

Also, as a part of the vehicle delivery process (QC1), the CPT 8000 phone handset must be installed and tested in the vehicle. The BMW Service Department is not required to activate the phone. However, at customer request the phone can be programmed by following the Easy Programming sheet provided in the phone body kit. The remaining parts from the Phone Body Kit (belt clip, A/C wall charger, and owners manual) should be placed in the vehicle.

PROCEDURE

In order to perform in-vehicle operation check of the Digital CPT 8000 Phone:

1. Vehicle's ignition and phone's power must be "OFF".

2. Connect Handset to coil cord, install handset in the cradle.

3. Turn " ON" ignition and listen for two audible tones approximately tour seconds apart.

4. Remove phone from the cradle.

5. Open flip cover of the Handset. The display should be illuminated and the words "ACTIVATION REQUESTED" should be displayed.

6. Depress the "POWER" key in the lower left corner.

7. The words "POWERING OFF" should be displayed.

8. In order to verify the volume adjustment operation: power- up the phone and operate top and lower buttons located on the left side of the phone (top button increases the volume, bottom decreases). Each press of the arrowed button should change the bar graph in the phone's display.

9. To "LOCK" the phone, press "FCN, 5". When "LOCK?" appears in the display, press the center ("SMART") button on the left side of the phone. The phone is now locked.

10. To "UNLOCK" the phone, enter the three-digit code 1-2-3.

Retrofitting of CPT 8000 Phone into Z8 vehicles manufactured prior to 09/2001:

The special Z8 (E52) CPT 8000 Retrofit Installation Kit (P/N 84 11 0 142 083) has been developed for vehicles manufactured prior to 09/2001.

NOTE:
If this kit is being installed as a retrofit for the CPT 7000 Phone, then the dual band compensator, compensator adaptor cables, microphone and dual-band antenna that are installed as part of the original CPT 7000 system, will remain and be used for the CPT 8000 system.

IMPORTANT:
If this kit is being installed as a retrofit to earlier production vehicles produced prior to September 2000, then Navigation Software CD Vi 7 must also be loaded to allow proper operation of the CPT 8000.

19. Remove the OPT 7000 cradle (3) from center console tray (1) by removing the two bolts (2) as shown. Install OPT 8000 cradle to the center console tray (1) in a reverse order.

IMPORTANT:
Once the TCU has been installed, the system will display messages: "BMW ASSIST INACTIVE" & "Phone Connected?" in the MIR display, when the "Emergency" or "Assist" soft buttons on the MIR are selected. This is a normal behavior, as the OPT 8000 phone handset must be connected to the coil cord for the TCU system to be fully functional.

20. The TCU must be coded for vehicle configuration and VIN data, as a final step of the installation procedure, to allow proper interfacing with the vehicle. The TCU will automatically perform self-coding upon initial ignition cycle following installation (cycle ignition off after approximately 30 seconds then allow 2 minutes for module to completely power down). After that step, module coding is completed.

Note:
On each subsequent ignition cycle TCU will verify vehicle specific data and recode as necessary.

21. On vehicles produced prior to September 2000, the Navigation Software CD V17 must also be loaded in order to allow proper operation of the OPT 8000. For navigation loading instruction refer to S/B 84 11 97 (May 2001).

22. Install cellular provider specific CPT 8000 phone handset in the vehicle, and perform in-vehicle operation check (as described earlier in this Service Information).
