Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Removing And Installing/Replacing Starter (S62)

Switch off ignition.
Follow instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery.
Remove battery negative lead from battery and cover.
Remove engine underguard at front and rear.







E39 only:
Unclip battery positive lead (1) from cable guides.
Release metal screws (2).
Remove heat shield (3).







Remove protective cap for battery positive lead from starter motor.
Release connections on starter motor.
Tightening torque.Specifications







E52 only:
Release nut.

Installation:
Tightening torque.Specifications
Disconnect battery positive lead from starter motor.
Unfasten plug connection (2) and disconnect.







E39 and E52:
Release screws.
Tightening torque.Specifications







Withdraw starter motor from transmission mounting.







Remove starter motor.

Installation:
Check starter pinion for damage.
Check starter ring gear for damage.
