51 36 070 Removing And Installing Left Or Right Rear Side Window (Touring)
NOTE:
- For cementing the side window, cements for cold and hot processing are permitted.
- Removing and installing inner window cavity cover strip for rear left or right side window.
Cold processing:
Comply with instructions on cementing windows.
Warm processing:
Open rear end of aluminum membrane in cartridge before installing in cartridge oven.
Heat cement cartridges to 80 °C for one hour in oven (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
Comply with instructions on cementing windows.
CAUTION: Cover rear side panels with protective covers.
Unfasten screws (1) and take off bracket (2) for roller cover.
Remove insulating mat (1).
Pull off edge protector on side window.
NOTE: Carefully pull off in corner (1) (danger of damage to edge protector).
Left only:
Remove connector (1) from side window antenna.
Secure connector and cable to side window with adhesive tape (danger of damage).
Installation:
Route cable (2) in recess.
Version with TV or navigation system:
If necessary, pull off front connector (beside the C pillar) and secure wire to side window with adhesive tape.
Mask inside of body around side window with fabric adhesive tape (e.g. Tesa tape).
In addition, mask area around C-pillar finisher on rear door.
Tape off all antenna wires on side window with cloth adhesive tape (1) (danger of damage).
Due to the different positions of the cement bead, the applicator roller of the knife blade must be given different settings in areas (A) and (B) (risk of damage to paintwork).
A scalpel is used for area (C).
Cutting depth for area (A) and (B):
Fit straight blade with adjustable roller (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service) on tool and set dimension (X).
Dimension (X):
NOTE: Sharpen knife blade before every use on a running machine with a grinding stone (even with new knife blade).
A scalpel (1) is used for area (C) on the C pillar (for severe contamination).
Cutting depths for area (C):
CAUTION:
- When reusing the side window:
- Do not damage lines for side window antenna.
Cut away areas (A) and (B) from inside.
Carefully insert knife blade between body and side window gasket.
Guide blade parallel to side window gasket. Cut through cement bead as close to body as possible.
CAUTION: Do not press down too hard on scalpel (risk of damaging the PVC spray-coating).
Applying slight preload (2nd person pulling on special tool 51 3 010 attached to move rear side window outwards), carefully cut away cement bead with scalpel cement around the C pillar.
Remove side window with special tool 51 3 010.
Remove cement residue from body aperture to thickness of approx. 0.5 mm.
Cut off old cement carefully with an universal knife (sharp as a razor blade) to avoid damaging the paint finish in body opening.
Pull off adhesive tapes all round.
CAUTION: To provide long-term corrosion inhibition, damage to paintwork (scratches and large areas of damage) should always be touched up.
When reusing the side window:
Carefully cut cement residues on glass ceramic material, and if necessary PVC spray-coating of side window, with universal knife (sharp as a razor blade) down to 0.5 mm.
NOTE: Dampen down suction faces.
Fit special tool 51 3 010 to tool trolley and secure side window.
Mount special tool 51 3 010 (without joint) on inside of window.
Install a lashing eye and hook in special tool 51 3 090 (tensioning belt).
CAUTION: The basic filler must have hardened.
Treat side window and body beside cemented area with BMW-approved materials (repair kit, Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
NOTE: Note ventilation time:
To prevent cement from gluing up the C-pillar finisher, you must coat the web (1) on the C-pillar finisher and the rest of the spray-coated area (2) with grease (e.g. rubber protection coating agent).
NOTE:
- No grease must make contact with the cemented area (3) of the side window.
- If applicable, do not remove spacer holder (4) and do not pull off liner.
Cut nozzle to size.
(A) = 7 mm
(B) = 11(-1) mm
NOTE: To apply uniform cement bead, use cartridge pistol (operated by compressed air or electric power, Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service).
Check expiry date of cement:
If applicable, produce a sample bead before cementing.
Cartridge must be arranged vertically against side window.
Shape of cement bead:
(A) = 7 mm
(B) = 11(-1) mm
CAUTION: Apply adhesive rapidly: skin formation time of cement, maximum 10 minutes.
Application point of cement bead is in center of C-pillar (1).
Maintain distance of cement bead from web of PVC spray-coating of approx. 2 mm.
Apply cement bead with radius of approx. 15 mm in corners (2).
Spread cement bead with special tool 00 9 322.
Fit side window underneath with special tool 51 3 010. Chrome strip (1) is to be flush with body edge (2) at front.
Fold in side window at top (1) and push side window completely toward rear (2).
Close rear door. Adapt side window to rear door if necessary.
Mount special tool 51 3 010 (without joint) opposite on inside of window.
Mount special tool 51 3 090 (tensioning belt) at top on special tool 51 3 010 (1). Hook tensioning belt at bottom diagonally in lashing eyes and pull tight (2).
Tension middle seat belt tensioner (4) until eye is approx. 400 mm above floor insert (4).
Tension top seat belt tensioner (3) until eye can be pulled approx. 20 mm toward rear (4).
CAUTION: Remove dirt from residual cement with Sika-Entferner 208 (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Service) before cement is hard. Do not press side window back out. Hardened cement can only be removed by machine.
Assemble car.
After the hardening time, remove adhesive tapes.
NOTE: Leaks can be found by spraying water on the sealing lips or with an ultrasonic leak detector and then eliminated by using a suitable nozzle.
