Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Removing and Installing/ Replacing Starter Motor (M54)


Observe instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery, please refer to: Service and Repair

Disconnect battery negative lead from battery.





Unlock plug (1) from pulse sensor for crankshaft and disconnect.

NOTE: For a better overview, this work step is shown on an engine that has been removed.





Release nut (1) and remove battery positive wires from starter motor.

Installation:



Tightening Torque





Release nuts (1 ).

Installation:



Tightening Torque

Remove lines (2) from starter motor.





Releasing both starter motor mounting bolts (1) on transmission:

Release starter motor screws from transmission output end with a long extension and a universal joint.

Installation:



Tightening Torque:





Pull starter motor (1) out of transmission flange and remove towards bottom.

Installation:



Check starter motor pinion and ring gear for damage.
