SUBJECT:
Mileage Increases when Coding Instrument Cluster
MODEL:
E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 Series)
Situation:
The total displayed mileage increases by up to 200 miles when coding a replacement Instrument Cluster
General Information:
The total vehicle mileage is stored in the LCM as a back-up for the Instrument Cluster. However, the mileage stored in the LCM is approximate, and should be used as a source of data only in cases where the mileage cannot be read out of the faulty Instrument Cluster. In such cases where the LCM is used as a source of data, the displayed total mileage on the replacement Instrument Cluster may increase by up to 300km (200 miles). This is normal operation.
Wherever possible, the faulty Instrument Cluster should be used as the source of data. Using this method, the transferred mileage value will be exactly the same as on the replaced Instrument Cluster.
Procedure:
Before removing the faulty unit, follow the coding prompts in DIS and first read out the mileage data from the faulty Instrument Cluster (Menu option 1).
Then install the replacement Instrument Cluster and transfer the data (Menu option 2) before completing the coding process.
The transferred mileage will exactly match the value from the replaced Instrument Cluster.
