SUBJECT:
False Alarms (DWA) due to Interior Protection Sensor (FIS)
MODEL:
5 Series (E39), 7 Series (E38). Vehicles produced to 9/98
Situation:
False alarms of the Anti-Theft System (DWA) may be caused by excessive sensitivity of the Radio-Frequency Interior Protection Sensor (FIS). Triggering by the FIS Sensor is stored in the "alarm counter" (DWA) and can be read out using the DIS Tester or MoDiC, thus establishing the FIS Sensor as the cause of the false alarms.
Note that the ultrasonic sensor replaced the FIS sensor in series production from 9/98.
Correction:
On a customer complaint basis only, replace the FIS sensor with an ultrasonic sensor kit.
Procedure:
1. Remove FIS sensor (Refer to Repair Manual 65 75 570)
2. Unclip and discard the FIS sensor outer trim piece
3. Disengage the upper mounting bracket from the roof panel by pushing the upper bracket "up", while gently pulling the roof panel "down".
Rotate approximately 90°, and slide the bracket out of the aperture in the roof panel, on the diagonal. Discard the upper mounting bracket.
4. In cases where the adapter harness is unavailable (see the Parts Information section of this S.I.), grip the harness (not the connector) and carefully pull to provide the extra harness length required for the Ultrasonic installation.
5. E39 only
Push FIS sensor yellow mounting lugs towards front of vehicle (locked position), and secure in position with duct tape to prevent rattling. The duct tape should be firmly fixed to the sunroof cassette.
6. Slide the new upper bracket into the roof panel aperture on the diagonal, taking care to point the molded arrow towards the front of the vehicle. Carefully pull the roof panel "down" during this operation to provide the room to maneuver the bracket into position.
7. With the molded arrows pointing to the front of the vehicle, assemble the lower bracket to the upper bracket, and squeeze together to latch in position.
8. Assemble the Ultrasonic module to the Cover, making sure the molded arrows on each component point in the same direction.
9. Attach the Adapter Harness to the Ultrasonic module.
10. Connect the Adapter Harness to the vehicle harness connector, orient the module and cover assembly so that the arrows point to the front of the vehicle, and snap the assembly into place using upward pressure.
