E46 - 323iA, 328iA as of 06/98 production
E39 - 528iA as of model year 2000 production

Situation:

With the introduction of the E46 (323iA and 328iA) and E39 (528iA as of 09/99) a new 5 speed Automatic Transmission will be introduced. The new transmission is manufactured by General Motors Powertrain Strasbourg and is designated as A5S360R (5L40-E).





The advantages/improvement of the 5L40-E. over the THM-R1 (4L30-E) are listed in the illustration.
