Procedure 1
Checking steering column support tube bracketGain access to the steering column support tube bracket by removing:
(1) - Onboard computer or clock
(2) - Air conditioning control module (behind storage bin)
(3) - Cigarette lighter/storage bin assembly
Examine the steering column support tube bracket to see if it has been modified as shown in the illustration.
If the bracket has been modified, reinstall the removed parts and proceed to Procedure 2.
Note:
Some cars may have a bracket that differs from the one illustrated. If this type of bracket (two bolt holes with no slide area) is found, it must be replaced with part number 51 71 8 168 442.
If the bracket has not been modified, remove the bolts holding the bracket and remove the bracket from the car.
Modify the bracket by cutting off the end as illustrated. Touch up the bare metal with paint.
Install modified bracket.
Tightening torque: 24 Nm Reinstall all components at center console.
