SUBJECT:
Installation of Compact Disc Player in 1995 M3 (E36)

MODELS:
1995 M3 (E36) produced after 9/95

Situation:
Pre-wiring of new (1-bus) CD data cables was phased into production in 9/95. Some of these vehicles were fitted with NON I-bus radios. The radio will operate, however, if an I-bus CD player is installed it will not operate as the I-bus CD player and data cable are not compatible with the NON I-bus radio.

Correction:
If a customer requests the installation of an optional CD player and the vehicle is equipped with a NON I-bus radio (part # 90 88 1 600 303), a NON I-bus data cable (part # 65 12 8 350 495) and power supply cable (part # 82 1 11 467 063) must be installed with a NON I-bus CD changer

(Alpine - BMW part # 82 1 11 467 700) or

(Pioneer - BMW part # 82 1 11 468 014).

NOTE:
If vehicle is equipped with an I-bus radio (part # 65 12 1 469 503): install an I-bus CD changer (Alpine - BMW part # 82 1 11 469 404), available Mid-November '95, using the existing (pre-wired) data cable and power supply connectors.

Radio Identification:

The NON I-bus radio can be identified by:

- the digital display being located in the upper right hand comer of the radio faceplate

- the absence of Weather Band (WB)

The C33 (I-bus) radio can be identified by:

- the digital display being located in the center of the faceplate below the cassette door

- the presence of Weather Band (WB)

Procedure:

1. Remove the rear seat bottom cushion, both lateral trim panel cushions, left rear trim panel, spare tire cover with trunk floor carpet, tail light assembly covers, and molded trunk sidewall carpeting.

2. Cover data cable ends to avoid contamination. From interior, push in the comer of the bulk access hole grommet nearest to hole where the existing data cable is routed through. Insert the round CD connector end through the access hole. Re-install grommet routing both cables through the same grommet hole.

CD DATA CABLE INSTALLATION ROUTE

3. Route cable through trunk compartment: through tube frame under parcel shelf, between the right rear speaker and body, along quarter panel to CD changer location. Leave enough cable to reach CD player connector. Tie-wrap cable to wire harness in front of left rear speaker.

TRUNK COMPARTMENT CABLE ROUTE

4. Remove left rocker panel trim strip, left front kick panel, knee protector and cover, and radio.

5. Route cable through interior: under left rocker panel trim strip (behind carpeting), behind left front kick panel and knee protector, behind dash board to radio. Leave sufficient cable length for radio removal servicing.

INTERIOR DATA CABLE ROUTE

6. Connect data cable end to back of radio with 17 pin connector as shown.

17-PIN RADIO CONNECTOR

7. Remove battery cover and connect the positive wire (orange) of the CD changer power supply (part # 82 111 467 063) to the positive terminal of the battery. Connect the negative wire (black) to one of the two bolts on the right rear shock tower. Scrape paint for firm ground contact.

8. Inspect all cable/wire routings and secure with tie-wraps where necessary. Replace interior panels and components. When replacing molded trunk sidewall carpeting route wire and data cables behind carpet and through vent holes in carpet behind CD player mounting location.

9. Install CD player (Alpine - BMW part # 82 111 467 700, Pioneer - BMW part # 821 11468014).

10. Connect data and power supply links to CD changer. Test/operate radio and CD changer per owners manual.
