PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Brake Line Routing

MODEL:
E38

Situation:

Some E38s produced during April and May 1996 may have had a brake line routed in such a manner that the line could come very close to the toe adjuster for the right rear wheel. If the line is too close, it could block access to the adjustment lock nut when performing a wheel alignment.

In order to prevent any problems during future services, BMW has decided to conduct a Service Action to check, and correct if necessary, the routing of the brake line.

Vehicles Affected:

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor

Model Chassis Range

740i DL45006 DL45125
740iL DL39932 DL40936
750iL DH67782 DH67792

Service Action Label Instructions:

This Service Action has been assigned code number 176. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD92 070) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 176 printed on the label and,

c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Procedure:

Raise the vehicle on a lift and check the routing of the brake line.

Look up from below to see how close the brake line is to the lock nut end of the toe adjusting bolt at the inner end of the connecting link. The clearance should be at least 5 mm.

If the clearance is less than 5 mm, carefully bend the line to the proper clearance.

Warranty Status:

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
