SUBJECT:
False Alarms (DWA) due to Interior Protection Sensor (FIS)
MODEL:
5 Series (E39), 7 Series (E38)
**Situation:
False alarms of the Anti-Theft System (DWA) may be caused by excessive sensitivity of the Radio-Frequency Interior Protection Sensor (FIS). Triggering by the FIS Sensor is stored in the "alarm counter" (DWA) and can be read out using the DIS Tester or MoDiC, thus establishing the FIS Sensor as the cause of the false alarms.**
Cause:
Under adverse conditions, external interference (e.g., reflected signals, microwave emissions, etc.) can be detected by the FIS Sensor and lead to a false alarm.
**Vehicles Affected:
7 Series (E38) produced prior to October 1997;
5 Series (E39) produced prior to October 1997.
Correction:
On a customer complaint basis only, and only if the "alarm counter" function in the DWA Diagnostics reveals that the false alarms were caused by the Interior Protection Sensor (FIS), replace the FIS Module with an updated version incorporating improved beam performance.
Note that the BMW part number for the updated FIS Module is unchanged from the part number introduced in May 1997. However, because the component supplier advances the alpha character (Index letter) on its own part number with every engineering change, an updated FIS Module can be recognized from the index letter "D" (or later) on the supplier's part number marked on the white part number label:
7 Series (E38) 52010418(D)
5 Series (E39) 52010404(D)
BMW parts stock has been purged of its FIS sensors with index less than "D".
In addition, 7 Series (E38) produced prior to May 1997 may require installation of a copper foil sheet. **
**Procedure:
Once the vehicle has been identified in the DIS tester, access the "alarm counter" by the following route:
1. Operation and Component Selection Screen - Highlight Body/Body Electrical System/Locking and Security Systems/Burglar Alarm System, then select "Test Schedule" button.
2. Test Schedule Screen - page to next screen.
3. Highlight "Service Functions", then page to next screen.
4. Highlight "Burglar Alarm Counter" then page to next screen to identify reason for triggered alarm. If the alarm counter identifies the Interior Protection Sensor as the reason for the false alarm, continue with the following procedure
5. Remove the FIS Module. Refer to Repair Instructions 65 75 570.
6. (E38 produced prior to May 1997 only) Install copper foil sheet (if not already installed from a previous repair).
6.1. E38 produced prior to May 1997 only) Pull the protective paper off the copper foil.**
**6.2. (E38 produced prior to May 1997 only) Guide the copper foil (adhesive side up) in between the headliner and the sunroof frame, in front of the FIS Module. Push the foil up to the stop on the sunroof frame. **
** 6.3. (E38 produced prior to May 1997 only) Center the copper foil, push upwards and apply to the sunroof frame. The foil may have folds in it but must not tear. **
**7. Install the improved FIS Module. Refer to Repair Instructions 65 75 570.
