Situation:
The engine oil level sensor may indicate an incorrect oil level due to a manufacturing flaw during the sensor production process.

This Service Action involves E38 vehicles with M60 engines which were produced from 4/94 - 11/94.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Correction:
- Remove the plastic cover under the engine.
- Check the oil level sensor connector for a white paint spot as indicated in the following illustration.
- If a white paint spot is found on the sensor connector, the oil level sensor has been replaced at the factory and no further action is necessary.
- If no white paint spot is found on the sensor connector, the oil level sensor must be replaced as outlined in the repair instructions, group 12.
Note:
Drain engine oil in a clean drain pan to be reused after the repair is completed.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action is assigned code number 138. After the vehicle is checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:
a) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1).
b) Punch out code number 138 printed on the label (2).
c) Bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty Information:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
