PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Improved Software for Cellular Phone

MODELS:
7 Series (E38)

Situation:
The CMT3000VR Cellular Phone incorporates numerous features which allow hands-free and voice-recognition activation.

This system also provides for the display of information in the handset.

Instrument Cluster,

and Multi-Informational Display.

In response to reports of problems relating to the Call Timer feature, we have modified the software of the Eject Box (handset cradle). As part of this modification, we have also enhanced certain system features, making the phone easier to operate.

Vehicles Affected:
7-Series (E38) - all 1995 models equipped with BMW Cellular Phone.

Correction:
Replace the Eject Box EPROM, in any Eject Box not bearing a software level of at least SW 03.

To identify the software level of the Eject Box:

1. Turn the ignition switch off for at least 15 seconds and then on, and then press the "Tel" button on the MID.

2. After this press and hold the soft key for options (double down-pointing arrows) for at least five seconds.

3. Software 03 is installed if the MID displays (EJB HW:02 SW:03.")

Procedure:
Check the software level of the Eject Box. If Software 03 or higher is installed, proceed to Service Action Label Instructions, and perform no repairs. If the software level is less than 03, or if no software identification is displayed, replace the Eject Box EPROM, following the instructions.

Parts Information:

Label Instructions:
This Service Action is assigned code number 144. After the vehicle is checked, Label Instructions: and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:

a) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1).

b) Punch out code number 144 printed on the label (2).

c) Affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
