Recall Campaign 94V-017

5401 (E34); 8 Series (E31)
Description of Problem:
BMW has determined that certain 1994 Model Year BMW 540i, 840Ci, 850Ci, and 850CSi automobiles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 118. Power-Operated Window, Partition, and Roof Panel Systems.
Safety Standard No. 118 limits the operating range of radio frequency (RF) remote control devices for closing or opening windows and/or sun roofs to a maximum of 6 meters (approximately 20 feet) from the vehicle. It is possible that, in limited circumstances, the remote control system may be capable of closing open windows and/or sunroof from a distance of greater than 6 meters.
Vehicles Affected:
This recall covers 540i (E34), and all E31 vehicles, produced from 8/93 to 10/93. In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this recall campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the Service Menu" of the DOS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
NOTE:
If a customer presents the customer notification letter (for that chassis number) it is not necessary to inquire on the DOS. Perform the required check and/or modification.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the recall. The final decision is the DC inquiry.
Correction:
Replace inside rearview mirror (with integrated remote control module) with a new mirror/control module assembly containing corrected software (which eliminates convenience closing/opening).
Two procedures are used: one to determine if mirror replacement is necessary, and one to replace the mirror.
Procedure I:
1. Lower all windows.
2. With ignition off, exit the vehicle and lock by depressing (and continuing to hold) button # 1. Hold the transmitter no further than two feet from the inside rear view mirror.
3. If the "convenience closing" feature is not activated (i.e., windows do not close), proceed to "Service Action Label Instructions."
4. If the "convenience closing" feature is activated (i.e., windows close), proceed to "Procedure II."
Procedure II:
1. Disconnect battery, as otherwise alarm will go off when mirror is removed.
2. Remove interior mirror base from bracket.
3. Unclip plug cover.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 112. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-031) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 112 printed on the label (2); and,
c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
