SUBJECT:
DWA IV Fails to Arm When Double-Locking
MODELS:
540i (E34), 8 Series (E31) - vehicles so equipped produced 3/93 to 11/94
Situation:
A small percentage of the above-mentioned vehicles may be equipped with a DWA IV module which sporadically fails to arm when the vehicle is double- locked. When this occurs, two chirps are heard instead of one, and the DWA LED is not illuminated. A second double-lock attempt will then arm DWA.
This particular malfunction is characterized by the fact that double-locking is not impaired when the DWA IV System fails to arm. It is further characterized by the following:
^ It is reproducible (i.e., repeated double-lock/unlock cycles in the workshop will cause the malfunction to occur).
^ If this malfunction is encountered, the affected DWA IV Module will exhibit the sporadic failure to arm from the first usage of the system (in other words, this malfunction will not suddenly develop after months of trouble-free usage).
Cause:
Software error in the DWA IV Control Module (software version below 7.1).
Note:
Software Version 7.1 was introduced into production during October 1994.
Correction:
On a customer complaint basis only, and only after having verified the customer complaint, replace the DWA IV Control Module with one having a software level of 7.1 or higher.
Note:
Software level 7.1 is identified as "Software No. 71" on the DWA IV Control Module Identification Page, and as "SW 113" on the label on the exterior of the control module.
