1. To identify the software level of the Eject Box, turn the ignition switch off for at least 15 seconds and then on, and then press the "Tel" button on the MID.

2. After this, press and hold the soft key for options (double down-pointing arrows) for at least five seconds.

3. Software 06 is installed if the MID displays (EJB HW:03 SW:06)

If Software 06 is already installed, proceed to Service Action Label Instructions and perform no repairs.

If the software version is less than 06, or if no software identification is displayed, replace the eject box EPROM, following the attached instructions.

Remove the functional insert sheet from the owner's manual and replace it with the one coming with the EPROM.

1. Turn on the phone. Recall the phone numbers and name tags stored in the first five memory location of the transceiver from the handset and write them down. These will be used later in this procedure as a check.

2. Turn off the phone and the ignition. Slide the armrest as far forward as it will go. Remove the trim plate below and behind the armrest as shown. Be careful not to damage the leather.

3. Using a thin screwdriver, release the locking tabs under each armrest tray as shown. Be careful not to damage the leather or break the tabs. Remove the trays.

4. Remove the handset as shown.

5. Using a thin screwdriver, gently release the locking tabs for the Eject Box as shown, while lifting up on the rear of the Eject Box.

6. Gently pull the Eject Box up and to the rear to free it from the lip at the front as shown. Do not try to remove the Eject Box yet. It should only be free from these mounting points.

7. Remove the two screws at the rear of the armrest carrier as shown.

8. Raise the rear of the armrest carrier slightly and gently push it forward to free it from the bracket in the console.

9. Release the two cables from the clips on the armrest carrier as shown.

10. From the underside of the armrest carrier, carefully disconnect the 8-pin modular plug and the 10-pin MID connector as shown. Do not use force or the mounting tabs will break.

11. Slide the armrest backwards on its carrier about halfway so that the two holes for the Eject Box wiring are in the middle of the square opening of the carrier.

Remove the Eject Box from the armrest, feeding the two cables through the holes in the carrier as shown.

12. Important! From this point on, until the Eject Box is reassembled, anti-static precautions must be observed. Use an anti-static mat (P/N 88 88 6 900 333) connected to a good ground as shown.

13. Remove the single housing screw (1), using a Phillips screwdriver.

Using a thin-bladed screwdriver inserted into the notches as shown, release each of the six release tabs by applying slight pressure.

14. Grasp the top and bottom housings at the front end of the Eject Box and gently separate them. Be careful not to damage the ribbon connector joining the two housings as shown.

15. Locate the EPROM (near the center of the board, and the only socketed IC on the board). Remove it using the IC removal tool (P/N 88 88 0 000 045) as shown. This tool was sent to you under the Automatic Tool Shipment Program. Refer to S.I. 04 17 95 (4257).

16. Insert the new EPROM into the socket by pressing straight down on the center of the part. Pay close attention to the orientation of the "cut-off" corner of the EPROM as shown so that the EPROM is correctly positioned in the socket. The metal pins of the EPROM must be on the bottom side when inserted into the socket. The label "HW03/SW07" or "HW03/SW06" must be on top.

17. Reassemble the unit by inserting the two end locking tabs into the corresponding slots in the top housing. Keeping the Eject flip depressed will make assembly easier. Press the remaining tabs closed making sure that the ribbon connector is not pinched between the housings or otherwise damaged. static protection may now be removed.

Reinstall the Phillips screw (1).

18. With a black marker, cross out the BMW Part Number, Motorola Part Number, and Revision Numbers on the label (1) as shown. The only text remaining should be "BMW", "Made in Germany", and the "MSN" number.

Place the new label that comes with the new EPROM over the BMW Part Number label (2), as shown.

19. Reassemble the Eject Box and all armrest components in reverse order of disassembly. Make sure that the Eject Box wiring is routed through the channel in the rear of the armrest carrier as shown. Turn the ignition and lights on. Check to make sure that the two symbols at the front of the Eject Box illuminate with the lights on. If not, the ribbon connector (see step 14 above) may have been damaged. Turn the lights off.

20. Perform an Eject Box Upload using the following procedure:

^ Turn ignition off.

^ Turn ignition on.

^ Press "FCN","MENU", "9", "0", "STO" on the handset.

The handset will go blank while uploading, and will display "DONE!" when the upload is completed. This process may take as long as five minutes.

21. Check that the phone numbers and name tags stored in the first five memory locations of the transceiver (see step 1) have been successfully transferred to the eject box memory by recalling them on the MID. For this use the RECALL soft key of the MID.

If the upload was not successful, turn the telephone power OFF at the handset, then turn the phone ON again using the TEL button on the MID and perform the upload again.

22. Remove the current functional supplement page from the Telephone Owner's Manual and replace it with the insert sheet coming with the EPROM.

Important:
With every installation of an EPROM HW03/SW06 or SW07, there has to be an "Eject Box Upload"

Do not operate any phone function during that upload!
