Transmission Fluid and Checking Fluid Level
The A5S 560Z is filled at the factory with a recently developed grade of semi-synthetic ATF oil, SHELL LA 2634. It is referred to as semi-synthetic due to the manufacturing process where the molecules of a mineral based oil are "cracked" or broken down into smaller molecules. A true synthetic would be built from the ground up, not by this cracking process. As the properties of the oil remain virtually unchanged throughout the service life of the transmission, the oil is suitable for a "lifetime fill" service interval. The transmission may only be filled or topped off with this fluid or other fluid specified by BMW as being a direct substitute for this fluid. Mixing this oil with other grades of ATF causes malfunctioning of the automatic transmission and is not permitted.Checking Fluid Level
A correct determination of oil level can only be obtained when this procedure is followed:
- The vehicle must be without load and standing on a flat, level surface.
- With the selector lever in the PARK position and the engine idling, switch on the low-beam headlights or the air conditioning if the vehicle is so equipped. This will increase the idling speed and ensure that the transmission's oil pump supplies a sufficient volume of oil to reliably maintain all oil passages filled with oil.
- Use the Service Tester or MoDiC to determine the transmission oil temperature. Oil level checks and level correction are only to be performed at transmission oil temperatures between 30 and 50 degrees Celsius.
- In the Winter program position, apply the service brake firmly and move the gear selector lever several times in succession through each gear position, pausing briefly in each gear.
- With the engine running and the selector lever in PARK or NEUTRAL position, remove the filler plug located in the bottom of the oil sump and add the specified oil if necessary until it starts to overflow.
- Reinstall filler plug, tightening torque - 100 N-m.
CAUTION
DO NOT REMOVE THE FILLER PLUG AT TRANSMISSION OIL TEMPERATURES HIGHER THAN 50 DEGREES CELSIUS DUE TO THE RISK OF INJURY FROM THE HOT OIL.
