Operation
A console mounted tip switch allows the driver to select either the Automatic or Winter mode. The Winter mode is designated by an ice crystal symbol (*) on the program switch. In the Winter mode, the transmission starts off in 2nd gear and the upshifts are programmed to occur earlier to reduce the torque at the drive wheels and prevent wheel spin. The chart explains the gear selection in each drive program based on the selector lever position.
For U.S. vehicles, kickdown shifts are programmed to occur when the full throttle position is reached.
In addition to the shift-lock system - which prevents moving the selector lever out of Park or Neutral when the engine is running without first applying the service brake - a shift-interlock system has been added. The shift-interlock system is a mechanical system which prevents the removal of the ignition key unless the Park position is selected and also prevents the gear selector lever from being shifted out of the Park position unless the ignition is turned at least to the accessory position (terminal R).
FAILSAFE OPERATION
When a system fault is detected which would impair reliable operation, the transmission control module interrupts the power supply to the transmission valve body. The transmission control module alerts the driver of any faults by signaling the vehicle's check control system. To enable the vehicle to be driven to a workshop, the following manual gear selections are permitted:
Selector level position P R N D 4 3 2
Gear selected P R N 4 4 4 4
THERE IS NO ELECTRONIC REVERSE LOCK-OUT PROTECTION WHEN IN FAILSAFE OPERATION.
