Electronic Body Module
The EKM serves as the processor for the system. Sensor and input information is received by the EKM and processed into output signals. These signals are transmitted to the instrument cluster and MID. The instrument cluster and MID have only limited processing capabilities, as their primary function is to display information received from the EKM.
The EKM contains an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory). The EEPROM stores vehicle specific information (such as VIN) and variable data (such as odometer mileage and service indicator information). It performs many of the functions previously performed by the separate coding plug of the E32 and E34 series.
The instrument cluster contains analog instruments for road speed, engine RPM, fuel level, and coolant temperature. It also contains liquid crystal displays (LCD) for odometer, trip odometers (1 & 2), transmission range selection, and EGS program (the last two items for automatic transmission only).
The MID displays information in several categories. These include displays for check control, lamp control, service indicator, on board computer functions, and clock and date.
The general module for the EKM system is designated GM II, and the [1][2]lamp control module is designated LKM II, to distinguish them from previous versions.
From the preceding system description and block diagram, it can be seen that the EKM combines functions previously performed by the following systems and components of the E32 and E34 series:
^ Check Control System
^ On-Board Computer III/IV
^ Coding Plug
