SUBJECT:
THM-R1 Oil Level Checking
MODELS:
525i (E34) with M50 Engine
Procedure:
The oil level is to be checked at normal operating temperature with the engine idling and the selector lever in "P" position (Park). The vehicle should be unloaded and on a level surface.
Don't expect to reach normal operating temperature with the transmission in Neutral or Park an engine idle increased.
Since it is not always practical to drive the vehicle for the approximate 15 minutes it takes to reach operating temperature, use the BMW Service Tester or MODIC (with 3.0 software or late to query the built-in diagnostics for the oil temperature.
Compare the oil level with the table as shown. The measurement is taken from the bottom of the dip stick to the top of the level reading. The fluid can rise as much as 30 mm from cold to hot.
