SUBJECT: Sunroof Repair Procedures
MODELS: E36 (325i)
Situation: The repair manual for the E36 is incomplete in the area of removing and installing the sunroof panel. Use the attached instructions until the repair manual is updated in future editions.
Turn winder counterclockwise (dead travel) until resistance is noticed. Then turn winder about 1/2 turn further.
In vehicles with a power sun roof, open sun roof by briefly operating button.
The rear end of the sun roof lid should now have dropped by distance (A).
Distance (A) = 2 to 3 mm.
Important! Moving the floating headliner quickly could damage the mechanism (guide/rotary catch pin) of the sun roof cassette. Do not move the floating headliner with force.
Slowly push back the floating headliner as far as possible.
Shut the sun roof (zero position).
Unscrew screws and bolts.
Installation:
Replace screws (micro-encapsulated) or install old screws with Loctite No. 270. Tightening torque = 4.5 N-m.
Loosen left/right screws (1).
Lift rear end of sun roof lid. If necessary, lever out left/right adjusting levers on sides of sun roof lid and remove sun roof lid.
Installation:
Replace screws (micro-encapsulated) or install old screws with Loctite No. 270. Tightening torque = 4.5 N-m.
Carefully run back sun roof mechanism in steps about 50 mm. Unscrew locking screw
(1) and take off adjusting lever (2). Shut the sun roof (zero position).
Insert left/right adjusting levers on sun roof lid. Pin (1) must seat properly in bore (2).
Install new screws (1) or old screws with Loctite No. 270 at left and right. Pull up adjusting levers. Screw in screws (1) as far as stop. Do not tighten! Unscrew left/right locking screws (2) but for the last four threads. Coat protruding threads with Loctite No. 270.
Note: Hardening time for Loctite No. 270 is approx. 30 minutes.
Install sun roof making sure that adjusting levers engage correctly at left and right.
Checking:
Push up on front end of sun roof lid at left and right sides with palms of hands. It should not be possible to move the sun roof lid up.
Push sun roof lid forward. Screw on nuts (2) as far as stop. Do not tighten!
Lower rear end of sun roof lid by distance (A).
Distance (A) = 2 to 3 mm.
Slowly pull the floating headliner forward as far as possible.
Open the sun roof about 250 mm. Carefully push the sun roof lid upwards and screw in and tighten left/right locking screws (2).
Shut the sun roof (zero position).
Adjust sun roof.
Ideal Adjustment:
Distance (A) of lid to roof equally large at front and rear.
Height:
Front = flush or up to 1 mm deeper Rear = flush or up to 1 mm higher
Lower rear end of sun roof lid by distance (A).
Distance (A) = 2 to 3 mm.
Slowly push the floating headliner torward rear as far as possible. Shut the sun roof (zero position).
Rear Adjustment:
Move left/right adjustment wedges (1) in or out so far until the ideal position is reached. Push sun roof lid forward and tighten nuts (2). Install and tighten screws (3). Tightening torque = 4.5 N-m.
Front Adjustment:
Move sun roof lid upward or downward until the ideal position is reached. Tighten screws (1). Tightening torque = 4.5 N-m.
Lower rear end of sun roof lid by distance (A).
Distance (A) = 2 to 3 mm.
Pull floating headliner forward slowly. Check function of sun roof.
