Free Form Headlamps

Free form low beam headlamps will be used on all models except the 850i, which will have ellipsoid low beam headlamps. Conventional headlamps use a paraboloid reflector to first produce parallel light that is then refracted by a patterned lens and directed onto the road. In marked contrast to conventional headlamps, free form reflectors shift the light distribution back to the reflector itself. Using the reflector to distribute the light requires minimal patterning of the lens while affording better control of the ray path.
