SUBJECT: Lever for Air Distribution to Footwell Area

MODELS: 5 Series (E34), Equipped with IHKR2 and IHKR3 (vehicles produced before 12/90)

Situation: The lever for controlling the air distribution downwards (for the footwell flaps) does not reach the right hand stop ("Max Open") or springs back from this position.

Cause: The angle of movement of the footwell flap lever is too small.

Note: The units affected were built during the following production period:

IHKR 2 01/90 - 10/90 Note: A longer lever has been
IHKR 3 from 10/90 fitted as of 12/90.

Correction: If this complaint is encountered, increase the angle of movement.

Proceed as follows (see diagram):

1. Remove glove box.
2. Remove side paneling on the right above the glove box and around the heater/center console.
3. Cut off lip that projects from bowden cable clamp (A).
4. Attach the clip to the housing so that the lip faces away from the lever; i.e., toward the foam padding (B).
5. Ensure that the lever rests against the stop (C) when in the closed position.
