SUBJECT:
Radio/CD Changer Data Cable Damage
MODELS:
E32, E34 (Model Year 1990 vehicles only)
Situation:
The round data cable connection at the CD Changer in 1990 model year E32 and E34 vehicles can be improperly forced together.
Complaint:
If the connector is not aligned properly, and pressed together with excessive force, damage to the pins and the connector "key" may occur. In some cases, this will apply battery power to the wrong circuits in the radio causing the radio to be damaged. A radio damaged in this manner will not operate, and usually show "ERR" in the radio display.
Correction:
When installing a CD Changer in a 1990 model year E32 or E34, examine the data cable carefully to establish the correct alignment. The connector should fit together with a slight push, without requiring excessive force. Any resistance mating these connectors is a sign of misalignment. The pins and "key" should be examined before attempting to reconnect the data cable.
Note:
Beginning with the 1991 model year, the data cable connectors were modified to reduce the possibility of improper connection.
