SUBJECT: Instrument Cluster Redesign - from 9/90
MODELS: 5 Series (E34) and 7 Series (E32)
Situation: A revised version of the Instrument Cluster Redesign (which took place on 02/89) has been used since September 1990.
Differences: The new instrument cluster has changed very little in appearance.
The only changes apparent from the front are that the scale of the fuel gauge has been made linear, and the red zone of the "R" has been deleted.
Other Changes:
The reserve tank indicator light is now included in the bulb check. It is illuminated for approximately 2 seconds after the ignition has been switched on (along with the parking brake and hydraulic brake indicators).
Coding Plugs: With this redesign, the housing of the circuit board and the coding plug are colored blue to indicate that there is no compatibility with earlier models. Further, the mechanical coding prevents the exchange of the circuit boards and coding plugs with instrument clusters produced prior to September 1990.
- Check Control: The number of text displays available has been increased for future projects.
Notes:
- Individual circuit boards are supplied from the Parts Department with
a basic bulb assembly. Additional bulbs for special equipment (e.g., airbag, ASC, etc.) will still have to be fitted when required.
- For all instrument clusters: If replacement proves necessary, ensure that only circuit boards with the same or later software versions are installed.
