SUBJECT:
Transmission in Failsafe Mode

MODEL:
525i (E34) and 325i (E36) with THM-R1 transmission

Situation:

The EGS control unit is in the Failsafe mode and cannot be accessed with the 2013 Diagnostic Module. This situation is most likely to be encountered during PDI after removal of the battery switch.

Correction:

If this situation is encountered, do not immediately replace the EGS control unit. First, remove the negative battery cable for a minimum of five minutes. Reconnect the battery cable and run the vehicle. Normal transmission operation should be restored. If not, refer to the Diagnostic Procedures Manual for further troubleshooting information.

Please refer to the Defect Code Fiche and Flat Rate Manual for the applicable operations.
