Front Cross-Member: Service and Repair

Replacing Front Axle Carrier - AWD -

- Remove splash guard. Service and Repair
- Remove front wheels. Service and Repair
- Remove air cleaner. Service and Repair
- Draw off hydraulic fluid in tank.
Installation note.
- Check front wheel alignment after installation. Service and Repair
- Bleed power steering. Service and Repair



- Attach special tool 00 0 200 on engine.
- Supports bear on bolts on side walls.



- Unscrew left and right engine mounts.
- Tightening Torque
Bolt: M8 22 Nm (16 ft.lbs)
Bolt: M10 42 Nm (31 ft.lbs)



- Unscrew Hydraulic fluid pipes.
- Plug openings.
Installation note.
- Replace gaskets.



- Loosen bolt (1).
- Remove bolt (2) and pull steering spindle off steering gear.
Installation note.
- Slot of steering spindle faces mark of cap.
- Bolt (2) must be in locking groove of steering shaft.
- Replace self-locking nuts.



- Unscrew left and right nuts and pry off tie rods with special tool 32 2 070.
Installation note.
- Bore and pin free of grease.
- Replace self-locking nuts.
Caution! Do not turn power steering as far as stop - radial oil seal would be damaged.



- Unscrew left and right nuts and pry off control arms with special tool 31 2 160.
Installation
- Bore and pin free of grease.
- Lock nuts with cotter pins.



- Unscrew brackets for left and right control arms.



- Unscrew left and right stabilizer mounts.



- Support front axle carrier with special tool 00 2 020 and a workshop jack.
- Unscrew bolts and lower front axle carrier.
Installation note.
- Tightening torque
M10 - 9.8 bolt 47 Nm (35 ft.lbs)
M10 - 8.8 bolt 42 Nm (31 ft.lbs)
M12 Bolt 77 Nm (57 ft.lbs)
- Clean tappet bores.
- Always replace and install bolts with a bolt cement



- Unscrew both control arms.
Installation note.
- Tightening torque 100 Nm (74 ft.lbs)
- Mount control arms in installed position, so that rubber parts of tapered joints are not turned wrong.
- replace self-locking nuts.



- Unscrew engine mounts and steering gear.
Installation note.
- Tightening torque� 42 Nm (31 ft.lbs)
- Replace self-locking nuts.
