SUBJECT: Steering Lock Assembly (production change)

MODELS: E-30

Situation: As of (approximately) 9/86 production there has been a change in the construction of the steering lock assembly. The change is minor but it does entail a change in the removal procedure, as shown on Page 32-14 of the 3-Series Repair Manual.

Procedure: Illustration Number 30 32 30 on Page 32-14 of the Repair Manual shows a screwdriver being used to release the tumblers on an early-style lock assembly. The new-style assemblies have a small, round hole in approximately the same area as the catch being released in the illustration.

Insert a small pin punch in this hole to depress the spring-loaded catch underneath, while the ignition key is in the "0" position. Turn the key to the "1" position, and withdraw the tumblers.
