SUBJECT: Repair or Replacement of Front Seats

MODELS: 3 Series (E-30) Equipped With Standard Seats

Situation: Replacement seat parts stocks have been standardized to the latest version. This is to reduce the number of combinations necessary to cover all versions of the standard seat in the E-30. The standardized parts include seat cushion frames, backrest frames and "repair seat" assemblies.

These parts may differ somewhat in appearance, but will replace the original parts in early production vehicles if used in conjunction with certain other required parts. The required parts are clearly shown in the Parts Catalog microfiche, and care should be taken to ensure that all necessary parts are ordered when repairing a seat on an early production vehicle.

Reapir Notes: 1. Mounting of seat in vehicles produced prior to 9/85

The new style seats are mounted in the same manner as the earlier style. However, since the stud (at the rear outside section of the base plate to seat rail connection) is too short a sleeve nut (P/N 52 10 8 100 424) must be used at this point, it may be necessary to drill out the hole in the seat rail to ensure sufficient thread contact in the sleeve nut.

2. Seat cushion cover changes

All new styles seat cushion covers have loop straps (arrow 3) and a foot guard (arrow 4). They are connected using the trim wires (arrow 2) in the loop straps and clips (arrow 1) to the foam base. The rear of the seat cushion cover is fastened in the same manner as later style seats.
Note: If the seat cover only is used on an early production foam pad, the foot guard and profile strip must be removed.
