Campaign - DME Relays Energize At Differing Times: Overview
90bmw06Group 12 Engine - Electrical
Bulletin Number 12 07 89 (1921) Page 1 of 4
Woodcliff Lake, NJ September 1989 Technical Dept.
SUBJECT: Dual Main Relay Control
MODEL: 750iL (produced 9/87 thru 5/88)
Vehicles
Affected: Model Chassis No. Range
750iL 276 5001 276 7855
Situation: Manufacturing variations may cause the DME main relays to energize or "come on line" at differing times. While the difference is minute (milliseconds), other vehicle systems can perceive this as a problem and as a result log a nonexistent fault. For example, the AEGS system can log throttle valve position or "TR" signal faults.
Correction: Install a bridge between both of the main relay I and II control circuits. This modification will allow either DME control unit to energize both main relays simultaneously.
Implementation: Whenever vehicles in the above listed production range visit the workshop, install the dual main relay control circuit bridge.
Important
Note: Verify that the vehicle has received the fuel pump relay harness update. If the vehicle has not received the fuel pump update, perform this modification in conjunction with the fuel pump relay/ harness update covered in S.I. 12 01 89 (1795).
Procedure: Remove both DME I and II main relays and relay plugs as combined units.
Unplug main relays and set aside. The main relays will be reused.
Remove the female connectors with the brown and brown w/tracer main relay control circuit wires. The connectors to be removed correspond to plug position # 4 and relay terminal # 85 on each main relay plug.
Use BMW special tool # 61 1 137 to release the female connector from the main relay plug.
If difficulty is encountered, fabricate two tools as shown and release the locking tabs.
The release tools can be fabricated by using a large staple from a heavy duty cardboard box.
Cut and discard both female connectors from the main relay control circuit wires.
Crimp new female connectors to control circuit wires while incorporating a bridge circuit wire (see attached schematics). The following materials should be used:
Brown 0.5 sq.mm wire 2 connectors, P/N 61 13 1 370 691
Reinstall both main relays into relay plugs and attach to aux. relay box as shown.
Service Action Label
Instruction: This Service Action has been assigned code number 21. After the prescribed work has been performed, obtain a label (SD 89-03) and
a) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label.
b) Punch out code number 21 printed on the label.
c) Bend label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix it to the "B" pillar (on driver's front door) as shown.
If the car affected already has a label from a previous Service Action/ Recall Campaign, affix this new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched out hole of the new label.
Warranty
Information: Parts and labor reimbursable under the terms and conditions of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 3 Years/36,000 Miles.

Associated Work: Use this time when other repairs or services are performed along with the listed warranty repair.
Under no circumstances should both work times be claimed. Attempts to claim both times will result in an unnecessary delay in claim processing and payment.
