This Service Information Bulletin contains a correction to ABS Test Step 03 (indicated by black sidebar). It supersedes S.I. 04 04 84 (913) dated December 1984 which should be removed from your S.I. binder and discarded.
SUBJECT: Test Adapters for the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
Two test adapters and a voltage supply lead in conjunction with the BMW SERVICE TESTER are required to properly test vehicles equipped with the Antilock Brake System (ABS). These items are shown pictorially below.
Please mark "A" and "B" on the respective adapters with a marking pen for easy identification.
THESE TOOLS WILL BE SHIPPED AUTOMATICALLY TO ALL DEALERS EQUIPPED WITH THE BMW SERVICE TEST UNIT.
ABS ADAPTER HOOK-UP INSTRUCTIONS
ABS TEST STEPS
01 Disconnect ABS wire harness from ABS electronic control unit (ECU located in glove
box). Connect ABS wire harness to adapter "A" (wire harness adapter) and then connect
T-plug of BMW Service Tester to adapter "A". Connect one voltage supply lead (of the
two) to adapter "A" and the other end to the cigarette lighter. Place toggle switch of
a"A" in position 01 for Mod. 5/6/7 (i.e. left position). Proceed with test instruc-
tions.
02 Same as test step 01, except place toggle switch in position 02 for Mod. 5/6/7 (i.e. right
position). Proceed with test instructions.
03 Same as test step 02, except also connect T-plug of BMW Service Tester to ABS control
unit. Place toggle switch in position 03 for Mod. 5/6/7 (left position). Proceed with test instructions.
04 Same as test step 03. Proceed with test instructions.
05 Same as test step 04. Proceed with test instructions.
06 Disconnect T-plug of BMW Service Tester from ABS control unit and connect T-plug to
adapter "B" (Control Unit Adapter). Connect plug of adapter "B" to ABS control unit. Connect remaining voltage supply lead to adapter "B". Place right toggle switch in position 06-07 for Mod. 5/6/7 (i.e. right position). Place left toggle switch in position 5A (i.e. left position). Proceed with test instructions. After end of measurement, place left toggle switch in position 2A (right position) and repeat test instructions.
07 Same as test step 06. Start with left switch in position 5A (left position) and then repeat
with left switch in position 2A (right position).
08, 09, 10 Remove adapter "B" and connect T-plug of BMW Service Tester to ABS control unit. Proceed with instructions.
