SUBJECT:
Air Conditioner Compressor Does Not Engage - Revised Repair Procedure

MODEL:
E30 produced prior to '88 model year

Situation:
E30's equipped with "Compressor enable" microswitches as part of the heater control lever assembly may exhibit an electrical failure of this assembly resulting in a loss of voltage to the A/C compressor clutch.

If troubleshooting reveals an electrically failed switch assembly, do not replace the assembly.

Remove the radio in order to access the wiring of the heater control assembly. Unplug black 2-pin connector from the assembly. Cut off the connector and strip sufficient insulation from the white and green/brown wires to allow you to connect the wires with a crimp connector. Insulate the connection using heat-shrink tubing.

Important Note:
The function of the two lower control levers to operate the A/C compressor clutch has been eliminated as a running change during production of 1988 E30 models. This revised repair procedure will result in compressor clutch operation similar to later production vehicles.
