DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT
These vehicles are equipped with an idle control valve which controls idle speed by varying the amount of intake air that bypasses the throttle plate. If the correct starting procedure (foot off gas pedal) specified in the Owner's Handbook is not followed, it is possible for a backfire into the intake manifold to occur. Such a backfire can damage the internal components of the valve and cause the idle valve plate, which regulates air flow, to remain open. This will result in abnormally high idle speed.
INSPECTION/REPAIR
1) Check the idle control valve for identification:
a) white label with black lettering
b) abbreviated part number: 1 285 095
c) "ink stamped" production date: 12.83 (or later)
2) If the valve does not correspond to the identification criteria listed above, e.g. production date stamp indicates it was produced before 12.83, it should be replaced with a new idle control valve P/N 13 42 1 285 095 that matches the identification criteria.

Reimbursement for this recall campaign will be provided through Campaign Entry.

RE: Recall Campaign No. 85V-058
Dear BMW Customer:
This notice is being sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
BMW-AG has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1984 BMW 318i automobiles. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.
Your vehicle is equipped with an idle control valve which controls idle speed by varying the amount of intake air that bypasses the throttle plate. If the correct starting procedure (foot off gas pedal) specified in your Owner's Manual is not followed, it is possible for a backfire into the intake manifold to occur. Such a backfire can damage the internal components of the valve and cause the idle valve plate, which regulates air flow, to remain open. This will result in abnormally high idle speed.
Precautions
1. Contact your Authorized BMW Dealer immediately to make an appointment to have the necessary repair performed.
2. Before the repair is performed, always follow the BMW-specified procedure (foot off gas pedal) when starting the engine.
3. Should a backfire occur during starting, resulting in abnormally high idle speed, the increased engine noise level and tachometer reading will indicate that idle speed has significantly increased. In this case, additional care should be taken when operating your vehicle. It should be driven slower and the following distance behind other cars should be increased. Arrangements for repair should be made as soon as possible.
4. If the prior warnings of increased engine noise level and tachometer reading are not heeded, a vehicle crash could occur, depending on environmental and traffic conditions.
We ask you to make an appointment with your Authorized BMW Dealer to arrange for repair as soon as possible. The repair consists of installing a redesigned idle control valve which cannot stick open even if a backfire were to occur during starting.
This repair will require approximately one half hour to one hour and will be performed by your Authorized BMW dealer at no charge to you.
If you are no longer the owner of this vehicle, we would appreciate your furnishing us with the name and address of the new owner, using the enclosed return postage-paid card.
We appreciate your confidence in our product and we wish to do everything we can to retain that confidence. Should you have any questions about this campaign, please contact your Authorized BMW Dealer, or one of our regional Customer Relations Departments at:
